With Habitat for Humanity, volunteers have the opportunity to build in their local communities and in communities around the world.  Entire neighborhoods improve and completely transform and through this transformation, families achieve the strength, stability and independence they need to build a better life.

Saturday, July 27, CLS partnered with Habitat for Humanity and assisted in building a home for a family of five in Atlanta.  Habitat homeowners build homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage.  Imagine the joy of building your own dream home, and working with others who are giving from the heart to do so!

Habitat for Humanity is a global nonprofit housing organization working in local communities across all 50 states in the U.S. and in approximately 70 countries. Habitat’s vision is of a world where everyone has a decent place to live.  For more information on Habitat and how you can volunteer and be a part of building homes and communities, visit their website at https://www.habitat.org/

We’ve rolled out the RED CARPET for the 2019 Red Dress Gala!

This is Classy Living Society’s 6th Annual Red Dress Gala!  The Sisterhood Gala on Sunday, October 13, 2019 is honoring “Access Taken,” by spotlighting women who have pulled out all the stops! We are honoring women who are pioneers in their fields, who have remained resilient in the face of adversity and who have defied the odds! Salute to the bold, the fierce, the passionate and the strong… they represent what it means to demonstrate an unwavering drive and determination! These are the women who have achieved the status “Access Taken” and these are the women who are also encouraging young girls to do the same!

In our quest to meet, greet, celebrate and sisterhood bond with amazing women in other states, CLS is taking the Gala on the road! This year, our most exciting event of the year is going to be held in the “City with No Limits” … HELLO HOUSTON!

Atlanta and Tampa CLS Societies were on the move during the week of July 8!

On Thursday, July 9, members of the CLS Wine Club got together at the Total Wine & More location in Brookhaven, Georgia.  They attended the Vive-la-france Wine Class, where they explored the greatest wine making regions in France – from the marvelous range of often-overlooked wines of the Loire Valley to the elegant chardonnays and pinot noirs of Burgundy. The ladies enjoyed various French wines as well as learned how to master wine aisles of fine wine shops and any restaurant wine lists with ease.  Cheers!

On Saturday, July 11, CLS members volunteered at  A.G. Rhodes Health & Rehab which provides expert and compassionate rehabilitation therapy and residential care to seniors. Volunteers provide activities for A.G. Rhodes residents including Bingo games, arts & crafts, holiday projects, games, parties & socials, and group visitations.

Also, on Saturday, members of CLS’s Tampa Society volunteered at East Hillsborough Habitat ReStore, which is a home improvement store that offers new and gently used appliances, furniture, building materials and more at a fraction of the retail cost. Each Habitat ReStore is locally owned and operated, and proceeds help build Habitat for Humanity homes.  Volunteers assist by processing donations, preparing items for sale, pricing donations, loading/unloading donation trucks, cleaning & organizing, beautifying sales floor and more!

Finally, to wrap up the weekend, CLS members spent Sunday afternoon cheering for our hometown WNBA professional women’s basketball team, The Atlanta Dream!  Since CLS is all about empowering women entrepreneurs, we set aside the day to pay homage to the Atlanta Dream ownership group, comprised of owners Mary Brock and Kelly Loeffler, the only all-female ownership group in Atlanta professional sports!  In addition, the festivities of the afternoon was a fundraising benefit for one of our wonderful nonprofit partners, Friends of Disabled Adults & Children (FODAC)!  FODAC’s mission is to provide durable medical equipment (DME) such as wheelchairs and hospital beds at little or no cost to individuals with disabilities and their families.

Self-Care in the Summertime

by CLS

Summer is officially here!  Time for lazy lounging by the pool or at the beach, barbecues, picnics, flip flops, long walks, and fun in the sun!

Aside from maintaining summer haircare and skincare, getting enough rest and indulging in nutritious foods, take the time during these beautiful summer days to pep up your mental and emotional health as well.

The sun is a natural producer of Vitamin D, one of the many nutrients essential to boosting your mood and warding off the blues.  Get creative – and take some of your indoor activities outside!  Given the longer hours of daylight, there’s lots more opportunity to get some sunshine!

Mental Health First Aid USA, a division of the National Council for Behavioral Health lists 15 activities to keep you feeling your best this summer.

  1. Ditch the couch and relax outdoors.
  2. Go out for a stroll.
  3. Explore your local farmer’s markets.
  4. Join a community garden – or start your own!
  5. Tidy one small space at a time.
  6. Make a summer feel-good playlist of your favorite music.
  7. Try a new exercise (swimming, anyone?)
  8. Dine al fresco – have a picnic!
  9. Look for interesting things going on in your community.
  10. Start or continue a journal.
  11. Reconnect with a relative or friend.
  12. Practice mindfulness – take a yoga class or begin meditation sessions.
  13. Do an at-home spa day.
  14. Explore new places in your town.
  15. Do a weekly personal needs assessment.

Self-care is important; and when you are intentional about taking care of yourself – mind, body and spirit – you tend to feel more connected to yourself and others.

Click on the link below for more from Mental Health First Aid USA on the 15 tips to make your summer a season of self-care for you!

Get Featured in the Chronicles Too!

What is it that sparks us to make a change?  Sometimes it’s someone else’s story that lights a fire in us.  Or something we see on the street as we move through our cities and towns that just doesn’t seem right.  Or it could be our very own story that moves us into action.

Chronicles Too! – the official blog of Classy Living Society was influenced by the Classy Chronicles, the official quarterly magazine of Classy Living Society.  It features amazing people, businesses and nonprofits doing amazing things in the community.

It takes courage to be vulnerable enough to take a stand or tell your truth.  In sharing the stories that matter, Classy Living Society intends to shine a spotlight of encouragement on the people who are making our world a better place.

Do you know of a remarkable person/business/nonprofit whose story should be told?  Or how about YOUR story? Click on the link below and enter your/their email at “Get Featured!”

Let’s spread the word about those who are shining their light in the world.  No matter how small the light of one, if we put together the individual lights of many – Oh, what a mighty light it shall be!

Classy Living Society provides support to its member entrepreneurs through educational workshops, promotion, providing networking opportunities and incentives  and so much more!  We believe in empowering, rejuvenating and promoting growth for our member businesses from within!

Toward that end, CLS awards a quarterly Concessionaire Spotlight to acknowledge and applaud those Classy Concessionaires who give back to the community through their business. Congratulations are in order for Ms. Nyota Byfield!

Nyota is a mom, sister, daughter, and native of London, with strong Caribbean roots. As a dual-preneur, she wears two hats – in her corporate career and as a business owner. By day, she manages the compliance, operations and client experience of a corporate office and during all the other times, she is the CEO of Frugal Chics Roc, a women’s online boutique.  The experience derived from melding these two worlds allow her the opportunity to be a viable professional and personal resource to others.

Nyota has always been an avid volunteer and knows firsthand the importance of giving back to the community. Upon graduation from high school, she was awarded a full scholarship to New York University, as a result of the benevolence of then-CEO of JP Morgan Chase, who wanted to give back to the Brooklyn, New York community. That experience, coupled with the strong work ethic of her family has instilled in her the desire to serve.

Frugal Chics Roc began when Nyota realized her thrifting hobby could help women who didn’t have time to scout out unique pieces, but wanted to look great on a budget. Today, Frugal Chics Roc has evolved into a mix of thrifted, new, and Afrocentric statement pieces. Nyota’s style influence is a colorful and cultural pastiche of her Caribbean/British heritage, New York City rearing and 20 plus years in corporate America. Frugal Chics Roc is an online women’s boutique that dresses the savvy, frugal, and stylish woman for work and play with statement clothing and accessories.

We know that every woman has her own style to be accentuated with our handpicked pieces…Dare to be different!

For more information on Nyota and her online boutique, visit her website at www.FrugalChicsRoc.com
