Glenda Demas, LPC

BUSINESS / ORGANIZATION:

Pearls of Change

Houston, Texas

ABOUT THE BUSINESS / ORGANIZATION:
Glenda Evette Demas Born Native Houstonian, I grew up on the Northeast Side of Houston. Graduated with a M.A. In Counseling from Prairie View A & M. A Member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Mental Health America, A Board of Director for The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Houston Affiliate, and a member of American Mental Health Counselors Association.

My inspiration and passion for raising awareness over the importance of mental health came from my own personal struggles, and desire to make sure that others knew that mental illness is not a stigma. Having lived with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder gives me the ability to show others that you can succeed, and live a fulfilled life with a mental illness.

My efforts are spent working with individuals struggling with PTSD, Anxiety, Depression, Suicidal Ideations, Bi-Polar Disorder, and Substance Abuse Disorders just to name a few. In addition, I hold a contract with KISD as an At-Risk High School Counselor. I am a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional specializing in PTSD, ART Therapy, Conflict Resolution, Crisis Intervention, Behavioral Health, and Anger-Management.

My overall goals are to expand my current experience, through education and research. To inspire others to work to become the best version of themselves no matter what they are faced with. In addition, to help individuals from various socioeconomic backgrounds understand that seeking help for a presenting mental health challenge is a great step towards self-care. Where the mind goes, the body will follow. Caring for our mental health is just as important as our physical health.

THE STORY:
I have been working in the helping profession for a little over 12 years with experience in education and crisis intervention. But found my passion to be Counseling/Mental Health Awareness from working with children in the education setting, and foster care system. In 2013, I founded Pearls of Change Education & Consulting Services LLC. an organization established to advocate for mental health especially among minorities, children, and adolescents. I currently consult privately with Therapeutic Alliance LLC as a Mental Health Clinician.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS / ACCOLADES / AWARDS:
When asked to reflect on a proud moment, the first memory that comes to mind is my Direct Appointment as a Board Member to the National Alliance on Mental Illness in October 2018. At the age of 40, I literally went from the Training room to the Board Room of the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness. I walked in to become an Advocacy Trainer for NAMI SMARTS to help individuals advocate for Mental Health coverage, and wrote myself in as a board member. This by far has been my proudest and biggest accomplishment.

This appointment will allow me to raise awareness on a broader scale, and reach many more individuals within the Houston area and surrounding counties.

LOOKING BACK:
If I could give advice to my younger self it would be to challenge yourself beyond your current level of comprehension and trust your process. When we are young we tend to want everything to happen rapidly with little to no adversity along the way. It's during the process that our character is built and we can miss out on that.

GLOBAL FOCUS:
If I had the power to change one thing about the world, it would be how individuals that are struggling with a mental illness are viewed by society. Individuals living with a mental illness should not be ostracized, or made to feel as though they are not normal. This negative attachment has made many people suffer in silence rather than getting the help needed. For this reason, we must work extremely hard to remove the stigma attached to mental illness.
