BUSINESS / ORGANIZATION:

Council & Associates, LLC

Atlanta, GA

ABOUT THE BUSINESS / ORGANIZATION:

I am the founder and owner of Council & Associates, LLC, a Georgia-based personal injury law firm. My experienced legal team and I take pride in representing individuals who have been injured due to tractor-trailer accidents, automobile accidents, and daycare center abuse. We are one of a few African American female-owned law firms in Georgia devoted solely to representing injury victims. Because we strive for excellence, we take pride in fighting tirelessly for our clients until a just result is achieved. Seeing my clients' reactions when we exceed their expectations is what fuels my passion for the practice of law.

THE STORY:

I actually started my law firm at my kitchen table. In 2008, when I was three months pregnant with my daughter, I lost my job at a local real estate law firm. I was devastated because I knew it would be difficult to find another job quickly due to my pregnancy. After a few unsuccessful job interviews, a friend asked me to represent her aunt who was involved in an automobile accident. At first, I refused to help my friend's aunt because I thought personal injury attorneys were greedy "ambulance chasers.” I quickly realized that my preconceived notion about personal injury attorneys was untrue. In fact, I didn't "chase an ambulance" to obtain clients, and I'm definitely not a greedy person. Thankfully, due to my hard work and dedication to helping others, my law firm has grown rapidly. I am proud to say that my law firm now has office locations in both Atlanta and Albany in Georgia.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS / ACCOLADES / AWARDS:

I am very active in the legal and civic communities both locally and nationally. Locally, I am a member of the Atlanta Bar Association, Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys, Georgia Trial Lawyers Association, Gate City Bar Association, and Georgia Association of Women Lawyers. Nationally, I serve on the executive committee of the National Black Lawyers Top 100 Lawyers, and I am a member of American Association for Justice and the National Bar Association. I am also a devoted member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

Thankfully, I have been nominated by my legal peers as a "Super Lawyer" in Atlanta Legal Magazine. I have also been named one of the Nation’s Best Advocates: 40 Lawyers Under 40 by the National Bar Association and IMPACT. In addition, I was highlighted by Attorney at Law Magazine as an “Attorney to Watch in 2015”. Recently, I was recognized by Georgia Trend Magazine as a “Legal Elite.”

RELAXATION:

When I'm not shuttling my two kids around town to various activities or hanging out with my husband, I love trying new restaurants. I am definitely a connoisseur of fine foods and wines! In addition, I am always ready and willing to relax at a spa. When I'm crunched for time and I really need to relax, I put on my favorite pajamas and I watch old reruns of The Jeffersons, Good Times, Sanford and Son, or 227. My grandmother and I used to spend hours watching these shows when I was little so carrying on this tradition really helps me unwind and reflect.

HEROES:

It’s very challenging trying to juggle being a wife, mother and a businesswoman. Some days I feel like I’m being pulled in numerous directions at once. However, I’ve learned to just take everything in stride and to set boundaries. For instance, I try not to schedule meetings on the weekends or after 4 pm during the weekday so I can have uninterrupted time with my family.
