BUSINESS / ORGANIZATION:
Leanne Townsend - Lawyer & CoachToronto, CANADA
ABOUT THE BUSINESS / ORGANIZATION:I provide a unique combination of family or criminal law legal services and life coaching using a holistic approach - assisting clients as a lawyer, supportive life coach, or both.
As a lawyer, I approach my clients with compassion and empathy, advocating for them on their important legal matters including divorce, separation, support, child custody or criminal charges. My background provides me with strong negotiation and resolution skills, but should a resolution not be workable, I have the litigation experience to be a forceful courtroom advocate. I have particular expertise in domestic violence and I am a strong proponent of victim empowerment.
As a coach, I use a holistic approach to help clients be the best version of themselves including making positive changes in their lives, removing roadblocks, rediscovering who they are, and empowering themselves to create the life of their dreams. My largest client base is separated and divorced women who have been devastated by divorce and need to rebuild their lives in a positive, empowered way.
THE STORY:By way of background, I have extensive experience as a lawyer, particularly working with abused women and children. I worked for over 16 years as an Assistant Crown Attorney holding the position of the Lead Domestic Violence Crown for most of it. I have prosecuted and defended a diverse range of cases, including domestic violence, impaired driving, child abuse, homicide and much more. I have extensive experience in the court room including trials in both the Ontario Court of Justice and the Superior Court of Justice. I am both a tough negotiator and fearless litigator, but I am also creative and resolution oriented in the appropriate circumstances. I hold a certificate in professional coaching and I also have degrees in political science and education.
In addition to my professional qualifications, I have personally experienced many of life’s challenges and learned firsthand the importance of taking care of ourselves through nutrition, exercise, mindfulness and other supports when we are going through difficult times. I know what it is like to feel overwhelmed, anxious, depressed, trapped in an unhealthy relationship and to self-medicate with food or alcohol. I learned tools to manage these feelings and maintain a healthy lifestyle, and I educate my clients on how to use these tools in their own lives. It is through my own struggles that I became inspired to help others who are experiencing similar challenges. My approach with clients is to make sure that they are looking at the bigger picture and taking care of themselves with proper supports. I don’t just provide a strictly legal perspective, as I believe it is important for clients to be holistically supported during some of life’s most stressful events.
My unique professional skills, multi-disciplined experience and personal struggles with many of life’s challenges provide a rare combination of talent, compassion and practical solutions for clients. I am able to assist by providing various types of coaching, legal representation, or both, depending upon the unique needs of the client. I consider myself to be a holistic lawyer.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS / ACCOLADES / AWARDS:I was recently featured on a local radio station as the guest expert on abusive relationships and I am really proud of being asked to do this.
I was just awarded Lawyer Monthly Magazine's Lawyer100 Canada Award of Recognition for Family Law.
I have published articles on women empowerment in Lawyer's Daily .
My proudest moments though involve watching my clients grow, become empowered and make positive changes in their lives.
ROADBLOCKS AND CHALLENGES:I am a divorced mother of two teens and I find it very challenging to balance my business with being a mom. My children tell me they are very proud of me and that keeps me motivated on the tough days. It is a struggle though, juggling both, and feeling like I am succeeding in both areas. I don't have a lot of support and there is no safety net financially if my business fails. This both stresses me and pushes me to hustle and make things happen.
For hobbies, I enjoy fitness, travel, and fashion.
SUCESS:Success for me is feeling empowered and happy in my work and personal life. The best part of success is feeling that I am helping other people and that is why I do what I do. When people tell me that I inspired them, it makes me feel so happy. The worst part of success is the long hours and singular focus that I have to endure at times. While other people are relaxing and smelling the roses, I am working hard and often feel worn out.
