ABOUT THE BUSINESS / ORGANIZATION:As the founder and principal of the first minority owned STEM and Arts private school in the state of Georgia, my mission is to develop future global leaders for the pursuit of excellence while exposing them to the fields of STEM and the Arts. The school was developed to fill the need of a hands-on education that allows students to be expressive in the creative arts, in addition to the field of science. My purpose was to bring the joy of learning back for students who have become disinterested in attending school because of the monotony. Our students not only enjoy learning again, but they are immersed in a culture of family, sisterhood and brotherhood. What sets us apart is the inclusion of gender based classes beginning in middle school, which is a time that is critical for students leaving elementary school. The implementation of this classroom dynamic has been successful and all of our scholars earn honor roll or above, because learning and classroom structure allows for them to learn in a style that is specific to their gender.
THE STORY:After working in public schools for over 15 years as a teacher as well as an administrator, I realized that there was a need for change. I constantly found that students were getting into trouble because of influences, negative peer pressure, low self-esteem, bullying and a multitude of other obstacles. I began the school in September 2016 with only two students in a 1,300 square foot space. Currently, we have almost 60 students and a waiting list in a 6,000 square foot space. We will be relocating within the next few months to a 40,000 square foot space to accommodate the growth that we have experienced in two years. The community that we serve is covers multiple counties in the Atlanta area.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS / ACCOLADES / AWARDS:The proudest moment for me thus far has been the school ribbon cutting ceremony in 2016. The attendees included several state and district officials. Furthermore, we are doubling in size each year and are able to provide a school that is family oriented and centered around excellence. Most importantly, the pleasure that I receive in knowing that I am helping to develop of global leaders of the future that will make a difference in not only the state of Georgia, but the world.
ROADBLOCKS AND CHALLENGES:Success and struggles coincide and one of our main struggles is the ability keep up with the growth in the size of our buildings. It deeply saddens me to inform parents who are looking for an alternative solution to public education that we have no more space.
LOOKING BACK:The advice that I would give my younger self is never put limits on yourself. I would have never imagined that I would be a trailblazer with the creation of Philmore Academy. Before the creation of the Phimore Academy, I was satisfied with being a and passionate educator, however, with the establishment of the academy I have had the opportunity to meet the most wonderful people and I am forever grateful for the families that I touch everyday.
