BUSINESS / ORGANIZATION:

KESHIA'S KLOSET

HOUSTON, TX

ABOUT THE BUSINESS / ORGANIZATION:
Keshia's Kloset is a 501 c-3 non profit organization that specializes in serving the needs of Survivors of childhood sexual abuse, to help young women of all ages deal with the effects of trauma by way of retail therapy, mentorship, community service, and motivational speaking. Keshia's Kloset was founded by survivor, TaKeshia Chapple, to help victims evolve into survivors and thrivers, by staying connected to a community of thriving women (mostly entrepreneurs and small business owners) who understand what they are going through - because we too, have been there.

"KEISHA" is an acronym for "Kingdom Educated Individuals Serving Healing Angels". The focus is on young girls between the ages of 5-25 who have been sexually or physically abused, to prepare them for a purposeful, meaningful existence where trauma does not define them but propels them. We focus on low-income communities, where studies show that sexual and physical abuse are more prevalent and where resources for help are scarce. In local communities, and all around the world, children are silenced due to fear and shame. The majority of abuse goes underreported or unreported at all - and this should not be! So, here in Keshia's Kloset we provide avenues for healing through advocacy, sex-education and shopping experiences for young girls between the ages of 10-18 designed to help them find clothing that makes them feel safe, strong and beautiful! We also work with young women ages 19-25 to help develop their natural talents and gifts, and prepare them to share their light with the world. The end goal is to have each young woman 5-25 share a motivational speech to an audience of their choosing, empowering them to use their voices to help someone else.

My goals is to help 500 young women and their families by the end of 2020.

THE STORY:
Keshia's Kloset began in 2013 while I was living in New York City, as a way for me to stay connected to people who understood what was going through. The reason I started this venture was because at this time, there was not a lot of open discussion about abuse at all. I felt that, other than a psychologist office, there were lack of answers given from someone who looked like me.

At first, Keshia's Kloset started out as an online retail boutique, selling clothes on eBay to women who desired online shopping. That too, was a way of connecting, but I wanted to really get to know these young women and serve the community, so overtime, I discontinued the online boutique, created the Keshia's Kloset website and it became more about the community than the clothing.

Around this same time, the news about Bill Cosby and Harvey Weinstein's alleged sexual misconduct were becoming national conversation, which was great! I was proud to know that I was not alone, but also devastated for the women who had been silenced for over 20 years, because I know how it feels. I too, was shamed into silence for 20 years.

I was born in Louisiana, raised in Houston, Texas and was sexually abused at the age of 5. I generally lived a normal life, until the age of 25 when I was living in New York and could no longer keep the secret. I identified with these women's stories so much, but most of them were famous and in lived in Hollywood. I wasn't sure where to share my own journey, and lack of resources to find a place to hear other local women's experiences. I was thirsty for healing and hungry for change. Hence, Keshia's Kloset.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS / ACCOLADES / AWARDS:
I am a proud mentor, and happy to be able to help in any way I can, great or small, to give some relief and hope to children and their families by simply coming over, or hanging out. We haven't received any awards yet, but it's not for the recognition - we do it for the community.

SUCESS:
Success, is not about me at all, it is about how other's receive what I am a giving out. If i can positively impact one person's life, I truly feel successful, because that one person will go and affect change in another person's life so the ripple effect has begun. For me, success is defined by the outcome of the lives i've affected.

RELAXATION:
I relax by spending time at home with my family or out in nature. I take solace in being able to snuggle up under my spouse and my little maltipoo, Jett. I also really enjoy working out, because after a good work out I feel very relaxed and at ease.
